Family Friendly Accommodation in Cape Town's South Peninsula

Travelling with kids changes what you actually need from a holiday home. It's less about the view from the bed and more about whether there's a pool for the afternoon slump, a garden the kids can run in without you watching every second, and enough beds that nobody's sharing with a sibling who kicks in their sleep.

We manage 16 properties across the South Peninsula, and these five come up again and again when families ask us for Family Friendly Accommodation in Cape Town's South Peninsula.

The Gem has a pool and hot tub, which alone puts it high on most family shortlists. But the real reason it works so well for families is we (your hosts) have young kids, so the house is set up with actual children in mind rather than kitted out for a couple and adapted after the fact. If you've ever stayed somewhere "family friendly" that clearly wasn't designed by anyone with kids, you'll know why this matters.

Crescent Corner is in Central Fish Hoek, so you're a short walk from the beach, the shops, and the restaurants along the main road. The pool and the private back pergola area give you your own outdoor space without needing to pack up and head to the beach every single day. Good option for a smaller family who still wants to be right in the middle of things. Sleeps 4 in 2 bedrooms

Turrakom is located meters from Longbeach in Kommetjie. Sandy days, no fuss, straight out the door into the water. With 4 bedrooms it's built for bigger families or two families travelling together, and there's enough space that everyone gets a bit of their own room by the end of the trip.

Sleeps 10 in 4 bedrooms

If Boulders Beach penguins are on the itinerary (and for most families with kids, they are), Beach Haven's location is hard to beat. It's walkable to the penguins, and there's a pool on site for the days you'd rather not fight the beach traffic at all.

Sleeps 6 in 3 bedrooms

Tranquility is our most budget-friendly option, and it's right on Fish Hoek beach, which is one of the safest and flattest beaches on the Peninsula for younger kids to swim. A good pick if you want beachfront without the beachfront price tag. (Also with parking)

What to actually look for in your Family Friendly Accommodation

A few things worth checking before you book anywhere in the South Peninsula, not just with us:

• Distance to a safe swimming beach. Fish Hoek, Longbeach Simons Town, WatersEdge, Boulders Beach and Windmill are the calmest and most sheltered for young kids. Not every beach here is a paddling beach.

• A pool or garden or walkable park. Kids need somewhere to burn energy that isn't a 20 minute drive away.

• Enough bedrooms that everyone sleeps properly. A "sleeps 6" listing that's really a lounge with a sofa bed is not the same as 3 bedrooms.

• A washing machine. With kids, this stops being a nice-to-have and becomes the thing you're most grateful for by day four. If there is not a washing machine, check for closest Laundromat.
